Ferrari testing 458 Challenge Evoluzione at Mugello

Ferrari makes road cars, it makes racecars, and it makes road cars into racecars. The 458 Challenge falls into the latter category, transforming the 458 Italia into the basis for Maranello's one-make spec racing series. It replaced the F430 Challenge in 2011, which in turn followed the 360 Challenge, F355 Challenge and 348 Challenge that started it all in the mid-90s.

Now the Prancing Horse marque is set to move the game forward again with the revised 458 Challenge Evoluzione. Seen here undergoing testing at what could be any tree-lined circuit but is likely Mugello (which Ferrari just happens to own in addition to the Fiorano test track at the factory), the 458 Challenge Evoluzione takes a step further with a new aerodynamics package.

Other changes will likely be nominal, and Ferrari will probably offer existing customer racers the option of upgrading to stay at the front of the pack instead of replacing their $300k racers entirely. One way or another, Ferrari is set to unveil the 458 Challenge Evoluzione, also at Mugello, after the conclusion this year's Finali Mondiali, the event that ties up the end of Ferrari Challenge series from around the world next week.

Dumb and Dumber 2

‘Dumb & Dumber 2’ Happening

This has got to hurt the Best Actor nominees. Jeff Daniels, Emmy winner for The Newsroom, said Tuesday that Dumb and Dumber 2 is on—and even tweeted a photo from the set. “The intellectual freefall from McAvoy to Harry Dunn, imagine if you will,” Daniels said. Daniels teased some of the scenes in the sequel, saying there are “some things we’re going to do in Dumb & Dumber 2 that make the toilet scene [in the original] seem lame.” Can’t wait to see Will McAvoy’s reaction to that.

2013 McLaren MP4-12C

Hennessey unveiled its HPE800 Kit for the McLaren MP4-12C for the McLaren MP4-12C in early 2012. In that instance, Hennessey tuned the supercar to deliver a total of 800 horsepower.

In 2013, however, Hennessey revisits the MP4-12C and came up with a new HPE700 kit that, despite delivering "only" 704 horsepower, it’s still bound to be a hoot to drive.

The new HPE700 kit includes an optimized ECU, an upgraded intercooler, dual air induction filters and a stainless-steel sports exhaust system. Thanks to these changes, the car’s 3.8-liter, twin-turbo V-8 engine’s output was increased from the base 616 horsepower up to a total of 704 Horsepower at 7,500 rpm and a peak torque of 538 pound-feet at 5,800 rpm.

With the extra power, the MP4-12 will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.8 seconds and will run the quarter mile in 10.3 seconds at a speed of 137 mph.

Infiniti Emerg-E Concept

The Infiniti Emerg-E is a two-place hybrid gasoline-electric concept that made its world debut at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. While its sleek shape and stunning styling dropped jaws, those on the green side of things immediately recognized it as a reskinned and updated Lotus 414E – itself a concept based on the Evora that debuted at the same show only two years earlier. Yet there is little wrong with a reworked, Infiniti-badged Lotus boasting 402 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque, especially when it features a lightweight, all-aluminum bonded chassis beneath an attractive carbon fiber skin penned by the automaker's Southern California design team.

The hybrid powertrain is all contained aft of the cockpit. Primary propulsion is accomplished with two electric motors, one on each rear wheel, both featuring its own single-speed transmission (this design eliminates the need for a differential and provides electronic torque vectoring control). Energy for the electric motors is stored in a 15-kWh lithium-ion battery placed behind the seats, which is chemically different from the lithium-polymer pack Lotus used in its 414E. Auxiliary propulsion comes from a Lotus-designed, all-aluminum, 1.2-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine, rated at 50 horsepower, that serves as a range-extender after the 30-mile life of the battery pack is extinguished. Teamed with an 8.1-gallon fuel tank, the combo allows the Emerg-E to cruise about 300 miles without stopping. Offered the chance to take the Emerg-E for a quick loop around an autocross course in Southern California, I jumped at the opportunity.

Climbing into the low-slung cockpit wasn't overly difficult, but it did take a bit of maneuvering to clear the wide floor sills of this right-hand-drive test car. Once in place, there was decent room for my six-foot, two-inch frame, and I found the bucket racing seat comfortable. In addition to the aforementioned battery changes from the 414E and a fresh new skin, Infiniti has redesigned the cabin with a unique dashboard, instrument cluster, seats and steering wheel.

Despite all of the power on tap, driving the Emerg-E at low speeds was drama-free. There is no built-in creep, but a well-weighted accelerator pedal made crawling across the paddock in pure-EV mode effortless. Infiniti claims the 0-60 sprint is accomplished in 4.1 seconds, but my full-throttle launch felt a tick or two slower (the engineer sitting next to me warned that performance may be reduced as the battery was just about depleted). Other than the expected whir of the two motors, and the sound of gravel being thrown off the tires, all was silent for the first second. Then the combustion engine burst to life with a pleasing deep growl and boosted system power.

Braking was strong, as the Infiniti concept shares its four-piston monobloc calipers and drilled rotors with the production Evora and supplements it with a regenerative system. The pedal had a solid feel, and modulation was good. When lifting off the throttle, I didn't note the strong drag often associated with aggressive regeneration - maybe I was concentrating too much on the first corner that was rapidly approaching.

Initial turn-in wasn't as sharp as I had expected, about equal with the new C7 Corvette if a comparison is required, but the Emerg-E had no problem ripping around the tight circuit and navigating all of the cones. The center of gravity is impressively low, with most of the weight positioned slightly in front of the rear wheels, and I didn't note any understeer through the slalom (the Pirelli P-Zero Corsa rubber gripped tenaciously). Thanks to abundant torque and instant throttle response, flinging the coupe around the old concrete runway was a pleasure. I'd prefer a little less overall weight, but I'll take the powerful hybrid powertrain and chassis tuning just as it is - that's a huge compliment to a concept car.

While the Emerg-E is an impressive little package, and the automaker has built a handful of prototypes, Infiniti has no plans to rush it into production. Consider its efficient technology nothing more than a test bed for future models as the automaker works towards introducing its first electric car.

Bugatti Veyron Super Sport - Guinness World Records

The Bugatti Veyron EB 16.4 is a mid-engined grand touring car, designed and developed by the Volkswagen Group and manufactured in Molsheim, France by Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S.

The Super Sport version of the Veyron is the fastest street-legal production car in the world, with a top speed of 431.072 km/h (267.856 mph). The original version has a top speed of 408.47 km/h (253.81 mph). It was named Car of the Decade (2000–2009) by the BBC television programme Top Gear. The standard Bugatti Veyron won Top Gear's Best Car Driven All Year award in 2005.

On 6 April 2013, Bugatti set the record for having the highest top speed of any roadster in the world with the Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse, reaching on average a top speed of 408.84 km/h (254.04 mph).

The Veyron's chief designer was Hartmut Warkuss, and the exterior was designed by Jozef Kabaň of Volkswagen, with much of the engineering work being conducted under the guidance of engineering chief Wolfgang Schreiber.

A number of special variants have been produced. In December 2010, Bugatti began offering prospective buyers the ability to customize exterior and interiors colours by using the Veyron 16.4 Configurator application on the marque's official website.

After taking last week to review the record category for World's Fastest Production Car, Guinness World Records has reconfirmed that the holder of this hotly contested superlative remains the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport.

The Veyron Super Sport set the official record back in 2010 with a Guinness-verified speed of 267.8 miles per hour, but other interested parties have recently contested that record's validity because the Veyron used that day had its speed limiter removed. With the speed limiter in place, the Veyron Super Sport tops out at 258 mph.

Guinness rules state that a record-setting production car must be unchanged from what is available to customers. While some, particularly Hennessey Performance, have claimed that removing the Veyron's speed limiter violated that rule, Guinness has settled the matter by stating that "a change to the speed limiter does not alter the fundamental design of the car or its engine."

This is a nice win for Bugatti on top of the news last week that the Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse also set a record for the fastest open-top production car with a speed of 254.04 mph. That record, however, as far as we know, has not been verified by Guinness World Records.

For its part, Hennessey, whose claim against the validity of Bugatti's record didn't work this time, could potentially break the record outright if given enough road for its own Venom GT to run. The 1,244-horsepower Venom hit 265.7 mph earlier this year before running out of room on a two-mile runway, though those runs were not officially verified by Guinness. Nevertheless, there still remain questions about whether or not the Venom GT counts as a production car by Guinness standards. The world record authority defines "production" as building at least 50 examples and only 29 Venoms are supposed to be built, though Guinness does permit itself to grant exceptions. Corvette C4

By the early 1980s the Corvette was something of a joke. The C3 generation had been introduced way back in 1968 and grown increasingly soft as the years rolled by. The Corvette could no longer run with Porsches and Ferraris, but had become a mushy boulevard cruiser — the left seat for the middle-age driver, the right seat for her lap dog.

The new C4 generation was astonishing in appearance and radically more capable than the C3. The curves of the C3 were tamed and sharpened into a knifelike profile. A big clamshell hood opened to expose not only the engine, but gorgeous cast-aluminum suspension links. The wheels were now a massive 16 inches in diameter and wrapped in Goodyear Gatorback directional rubber. And the interior was even a little spacey, with a digital dashboard that lit up like a game of Frogger.

What initially held the C4 back was a lackluster "Cross-Fire Injection" version of the 5.7-liter small-block V8 that only made 205 hp, the crude Doug Nash "4+3" manual transmission, and a suspension tuned brutally stiff. But the new Corvette could run away from some Porsches and was an instant winner in showroom stock racing. It was a real sports car again.

2015 Ford Mustang

The Mustang aficionados at MustangG6 have come across a handful of prototypes at a hotel in Arizona.

While the cars are heavily camouflaged, the pictures suggest it will feature a prominent grille, slender headlights and new door mirrors. We can also see the model will likely have a similar roofline to its predecessor.

The interior photo doesn't reveal much but we can make out a three-spoke steering wheel and handful of metallic accents. Despite our limited view, the 2015 Mustang is expected to have a higher quality cabin with upgraded technology.

The endless stream of rumors makes it hard to sort fact from fiction but the general consensus suggests the model will be offered with a 2.3-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost engine that develops 350 bhp (261 kW) and a 5.0-liter V8 that produces approximately 450 bhp (335 kW). There have also been rumors about an entry-level V6 and range-topping Shelby GT350 with "substantially more" than 450 bhp (335 kW), but nothing is official as of yet.

Ferrari 458 Monte Carlo

A Ferrari 458 Monte Carlo has been spied undergoing testing in Maranello before a very possible September public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The hotter version of the 458 Italia could receive the Scuderia moniker once it arrives later this year packing more power in a lighter body. The camouflaged prototype seen in these two photos can't really hide all the changes Ferrari has in tow for the meaner 458. We notice a more aggressive front bumper with air inlet holes, lowered ride height and different alloys with wider tires.

Other changes include an air inlet scoop in front of the rear wheels, dual exhaust arrangement, central racing stripes, different rear bumper and most likely a one-piece bar/grille uniting the taillights. According to most recent reports, the Ferrari 458 Monte Carlo / Scuderia will be around 100 kg (220 lbs) lighter than the Italia and should pack an extra 30 HP (22 kW) for a grand total of more than 600 HP (441 kW) coming from the V8 4.5-liter engine.

These changes should grant the car with a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) run in less than 3.4 seconds and a top speed of more than 202 mph (325 km/h). Source:clublexus.com

The Ferrari - LaFerrari

Ferrari’s most recent installment in the super car realm ties with the older Huayra in top speed, again at 230 MPH (370 KMH). It’s engine boasts an extra .3 liters of displacement, bringing this V-12 beast up to 6.3 liters in all. That extra .3 liters has quite the impact though, with the LaFerrari having over 950 horsepower in all.

All of that comes from only 664 lb-ft or torque. It is one of the few super cars in the world to also be a hybrid (take that, Prius!). That’s right, some of this mighty stallion’s power comes from not-so-humble electric motor.
